![]() Rating: - Creative Combinations, poorly explained recipesI like the huge variety of recipes, it sparks lots of ideas. However I have found the recipes strangely off at times. For example, page 283 has a Rice Noodle stirfry, where they have you make a sauce, then they never tell you what to do with it. Now this is a pretty basic recipe, but still I found myself almost done cooking with an orphaned bowl of sauce, which I just dumped in. Another recipe for coconut soup has 6 cups of water to one can of coconut milk - its almost not even worth adding the can of coconut milk at this point... Rating: - Creative ideas, bland executionI was excited to try a new vegetarian cookbook with "American" vegetarian food (I cook mostly world cuisine), but ended up being disappointed with Vegetarian Planet. Most of the recipes I tried had what sounded like very creative ingredient combinations--such as bowtie pasta with red lentils and ginger--that fell flat because the dish was simply.. lentils, ginger, and pasta. Very bland. I was able to kick up the flavors with arugula, garlic, breadcrumbs, and lots of other spices, but it's annoying to have to alter a recipe on the fly when all you want is to come home from work, follow the recipe, and have a delicious and easy meal. Unfortunately, a lot of the recipes I tried required just that extra effort. I must also add that for vegans and lactose-intolerant individuals, this is a very dairy-reliant cookbook. Bottom line--this would be good to buy on sale if you already know how to cook and would like some new inspiration, or have the time to dink around in the kitchen to alter these recipes. Rating: - Great for advanced cooksI'm not a vegetarian, but I often enjoy eating vegetarian foods and was searching for a good cookbook that would satisfy even my husband's primarily carnivorous tastes. We chose this cookbook for the variety of the recipes it included. We have cooked several of the recipes, all of which have been delicious. I only have two complaints (1) some of the items in many of the recipes can be difficult to find in your regular grocery store (2) many of the recipes require a good bit of cooking know-how and involve some complicated tasks... For example, the Jamaican Black Bean Burgers recipe includes the very spicy Habanero (or Scotch Bonnet peppers) that must be cut wearing gloves. The author makes no mention of this, and if you didn't know better you could really be in for a painful surprise. As long as you have a good handle on some advanced cooking techniques, this cookbook is great. But novice cooks beware - the recipes aren't always as easy as they look. Rating: - Not a healthy vegetarian cookbookI agree completely with the people who gave this book a low rating. The book is heavy on dairy (milk and butter). I read on the WW blog that it was recommended - but I don't understand how that can be. If a person on WW ate from the recipes in this book, they would be on WW FOREVER! Can't even resell this book for what I paid for it. I may try later to revamp some of the recipes to be more health conscious by substituting healthier ingredients.
