Black cats and witches and grinning pumpkins that glow with an eerie orange light--BOO! When spooky creatures start showing up everywhere it can mean only one thing: Halloween is here. Get into the spirit with dozens for ideas for holiday decorations: a Ghost Lamp, with a sheet draped over the bulb; a Treat Bucket dripping with blood-red nail polish; Yummy Mummies; and a Skeleton Jug. There's also a witch hat, a broomstick, flying bats, and directions for a truly "Frightful Feast"--complete with spiderweb invitations, a scary table setting, and awfully good recipes for all the ghosts and goblins stopping by! Trim size: 8 1/2 x 11. Amazon.com Review: Interior designer Jill Williams Grover remembers that as a young girl, she chose her trick-or-treat visits not for what candy she'd receive but because of the front porch decorations. Obviously her fascination with Halloween continued into adulthood, and her marvelously inventive guide shows you how to turn your own home into a coveted trick-or-treating stop or the perfect place for a Halloween party. "Scary Nibbles" offers spooky snacks, like Ghost Sticks (white-chocolate-covered pretzel sticks) or Hand Full of Candy (a latex glove fitted with pointy black fingernails and filled with jawbreakers). "Enter at Your Own Risk" lets you startle your arriving visitors with blood-red footprints marching up the Poppin' Walkway (the secret is bubble wrap) and provides ideas for eerie decor, such as a witch hat luminary, masked and jeweled pumpkins, skeleton topiary, and of course, the Invisible Man. "Frightful Feast" sets forth a tablescape of ghoulish goodies, from spiderweb invitations, spider tablecloth, and bat napkins to dripping candles and Dracula's Bow Tie Pasta. "Goblin Gathering" rounds out the spooky selections with a Cyclops Mug, Frankenstein Cone Cake, and relevant place cards, place mats, and other tableware. Complete directions are given for all the projects, and there are recipes for the edibles (enough for a full-fledged Halloween dinner party). The great color photos make clear that these scary scenes are both fun and sophisticated--though kids will adore them, they'll also delight the grownups brave enough to venture into your house. --Amy Handy Related Items:
Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Not for meI wanted to like this book! I bought it because one of the comments was so inflammatory and obviously made by someone with an agenda, that I felt sorry for the writer and wanted to give the book a chance. One of the things that bothered me the most are the random - and incorrect - usages of quotation marks. I just couldn't take the book seriously. There are some cute crafts that young children would enjoy, but there is nothing remotely scary. Rating: - Not Scary at all!Having scary in the title is misleading. The book is fine for children's parties and has a few of nice ideas, but it is far from scary. However, some of the projects are too "artsie" and cute for me. If you're buying for young children's party ideas, it's a good book. Rating: - Basic and boringThis book has warmed over ideas, they are nowhere close to scary. They are cutesy and meant for people who feel like Halloween isn't a "real" holiday. Rating: - A cut above mostLike most Halloween craft books, this one is definitely family-friendly -- so if you want to know how to build a realistic heart that pumps blood, look elsewhere. That said, the projects in this book are definitely a cut above the average "cutesy" Halloween projects you see every year. The designs are clever, visually appealing, and easy to do. For the price, this is an excellent book.
