Amazon.com Review: In a sea of diet cookbooks and healthy eating plans, the American Medical Association Family Health Cookbook is a breath of fresh air, with its easy-to-follow cooking instructions and handy nutritional charts. The AMA is the nation's largest organization of doctors--so you're in safe hands with these authors. The collection kicks off with a 50-page section on good nutrition based on the USDA's food pyramid. Here you'll learn how to incorporate the essential food groups into your family's diet without breaking a sweat. Then comes the pièce de résistance--350 recipes that prove healthy eating doesn't have to be dull. These dishes are vibrant and creative, and will certainly appeal to young taste buds. A Modern Macaroni and Cheddar dish is just as tasty as traditional versions, but contains considerably less fat, and the Double Chocolate Brownies use apple sauce as a substitute for some of the shortening. Cooks can choose from a huge selection of ethnically diverse or more traditional entrees--from Thai Stir-Fry with Ginger and Mint to Summer Sloppy Joes. There are also delicious recipes for salads, appetizers, desserts, drinks, and light snacks. Whether you're whipping up a light lunch or commanding a huge dinner party, the book abounds with fresh and inspired ideas. Simple step-by-step cooking instructions make this a great book for those new to the kitchen, or for cooks in a hurry. --Naomi Gesinger Accessories: Related Items:

![]() Rating: - Never Fails!I requested, and received this cookbook from my husband for Christmas, 11 years ago - and I still consistently use it. I love the yeast waffles, the cornbread (with yogurt - now the only way I make it - and I KNOW that's not Southern OR Northern traditional. :D) The pizza crust is my favorite, though I am always trying different ones - returning to this wonderful standby. There are terrific soups, dips, treats, vegetable dishes. Eating healthy is possible with good ingredients and the help of the ideas in this book. Smakelijk! Rating: - I DON'T TRUST DIETITIANS TO BE ARTFUL WITH FOODFrankly, many cookbooks of this type that are written by dietitians or doctors produce recipes that are more clinical than tasty. I expected that this one would be one more in that style. Boy, was I surprised and impressed with this cookbook. The recipes are easy enough and ambititiously touch on the many cuisines that make up our American melting pot. Plus, all the ones I have made are very tasty. Southern cuisines, for example, are often left out of these cookbooks, but not here. The Yogurt Corn Bread is an ace of a recipe and lead me to believe that these authors know how to say "ya'll" and cook that way too. This is a superb cookbook that not only has consistently excellent recipes but also has cooking tips that are well beyond what could be expected from the American Medical Associaton. Bravos to the AMA for putting out this cookbook. Buy this cookbook. It is a steal of a deal. Rating: - OutstandingA miraculous three-quarters of the recipes I've tried from this book have been keepers. The authors have somehow managed to avoid the pitfall of trying to make palatable meals out of skim milk and celery. Instead, they have chosen dishes that at their best do not rely on unhealthy ingredients. Butter, cheese, and the like do appear in some recipes, in moderate amounts, just enough to prevent feeling that there's something missing. Among the best of the book: Fennel and prosciutto risotto, Bulgur taboule, Butternut squash soup, Minted couscous salad, Fiery pork tenderloin, and a gingery won ton soup that will be in heavy rotation at our house for years to come. Rating: - Great FoodI am a gourmet cook who was looking for some steady, healthy recipes. I have been pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. All of the recipes I have tried have been very good. There is very good variety and the recipes are easy. Bon Appetit!
