![]() Rating: - Piece O' Junk! This review is for: CDN ProAccurate Digital Candy & Deep Fry Thermometer. I purchased this thermometer for making candy. From tip to tip this baby is 13-inches long. The digital viewing area (the red part) is about 4 1/2-inches long and 1 1/2-inches wide and it sits upon an 8 1/2-inch long x 1/4-inch wide little "rod"--making it very, very top heavy. At the very bottom of the "rod" is a little red tip. This red tip must be in your boiling candy mixture at all times to get an accurate temperature reading. It also comes with a good size clip which, by the way, does not stay in place very well. I just tried to make a batch of peanut brittle with this thermometer and it was a nightmare. This was the second time I attempted to use this thermometer by CDN. Because this thermometer is so top heavy, it kept sliding over to one side. I would try to adjust the clip and the thermometer, but it kept falling to one side or the other. I couldn't get an accurate reading because the thermometer would not sit securely enough in the pot. The little red tip must be completely submerged in the candy mixture to get an accurate reading and with this thermometer being so top heavy and wobbling all around I couldn't get an accurate reading. Afterwards, I went to clean the thermometer and some of the coating on the red tip (the important part that actually is supposed to READ the temperature) chipped off!!!!!!!! And this is only the second time I have used it!!!!! What a cheap piece of junk, trash, garbage!!! Waste of money! If you want a good thermometer for making candy, DO NOT buy this one. It is very frustrating to work with to say the least. The only good thing is that, for a digital thermometer, it was easy to read and understand--thus, I give it one star--not the zero stars that it really deserves. By the way, I never was able to finish the batch of peanut brittle that I started because the thermometer just failed to give proper readings. Rating: - Good, but could be better. This thermometer is much larger than the picture might indicate. The probe is roughly 12" in length, which is good for larger pots. The clip for attaching the thermometer to the side of the pot is not very versatile, and is designed for thin-wall pots. It has a tendency to want to climb up, and pop off thick-walled commercial cookware. Next, I would have to say that the calibration on this particular unit is off by about 2 degrees under the actual temperature, but knowing this flaw makes it easy to compensate for it. The presets are nice, and it will sound an alarm as the temperature reaches 3 degrees of your target temp. Overall I would say this is a nice unit, but it is in need of some refinement. Rating: - Excellent, but could use a few minor improvementsI have been using this thermometer for the last couple years. It is extremely accurate. I use it for candy making -- caramel, fondant, and chocolate tempering. There are a few minor issues. The clip-on attachment is flimsy and pretty much worthless. Because of the probe's length and the need to keep the tip of it off the bottom of the pan, it is very top-heavy and the clip simply isn't strong enough to hold it in place. I don't bother even trying to clip it to the pan. I just occasionally dip the thermometer in the candy to check the temperature. Once the candy approaches the desired temp, I simply hold the thermometer against the wooden spoon as I stir. The length of the probe makes its fairly easy to do this -- just make sure the tip isn't touching the bottom of the pan. The read-out is large, but can be difficult to read sometimes because it is on the side of the unit. All in all, however, I am very happy with it. Rating: - DON'T TRUST THIS ITEMThis is not water-proof. It dropped in the sink, and I grabbed it out immediately. I thought everything was OK, but after making about 10 batches of lollipops, I realized that it was no longer keeping the proper temp. In fact, it was about 10 degrees below true temp. Therefore, all the batches were ruined -- not hard crack. I loved the thermometer until this happened. For the price, I expected much more. On the plus side: before it stopped reading the correct temperature, I enjoyed the fact that it had pre-set temperatures. This was a mighty help in making candy. I also liked that it beeped with it was within five degrees of required temperature, and the beeps became more frequent as it reached temp. This is a great thermometer if you are handier than I am, but if you might drop it into liquid, all bets are off.
