These are hard words for Vivian Paley, whose own kindergarten was one of Sonya's schools, the integrated classroom so lovingly and hopefully depicted by Paley in White Teacher. Confronted with the grown-up Sonya, now on her way to a black college, and with a chorus of voices questioning the fairness and effectiveness of integrated education, Paley sets out to discover the truth about the multicultural classroom from those who participate in it. This is an odyssey undertaken on the wings of conversation and storytelling in which every voice adds new meaning to the idea of belonging, really belonging, to a school culture. Here are black teachers and minority parents, immigrant families, a Native American educator, and the children themselves, whose stories mingle with the author's to create a candid picture of the successes and failures of the integrated classroom. As Paley travels the country listening to these stories, we see what lies behind recent moves toward self-segregation: an ongoing frustration with racism as well as an abiding need for a nurturing community. And yet, among these diverse voices, we hear again and again the shared dream of a classroom where no family heritage is obscured and every child's story enriches the life of the schoolhouse. 'It's all about dialogue, isn't it?' asks Lorraine, a black third-grade teacher whose story becomes a central motif. And indeed, it is the dialogue that prevails in this warmly provocative and deeply engaging book, as parents and teachers learn how they must talk to each other, and to their children, if every child is to secure a sense of self in the schoolroom, no matter what the predominant ethnic background.  Rating:  - KwanzaaEven though the content of this book is relevent and to the point of multiculturalism in our schools and society today, the book is written more for a child than an adult and becomes tedious halfway through. Ms. Paley needs to hire a writer to convey her messages! Rating: - What is Diversity?This book really stresses learning about diversity through dialog with others. Some of the examples she uses are a little idealistic and corny, but her main message is important. She points you that as a society we always find someone to stigmatize and stereotype. The way to get over these hurdles is to talk openly and learn from each other. Only then can diverse people feel truly comfortable with each other. Rating:  - Unorganized, Obvious, and IgnorantThe author of this book doesn't even realize how poorly written this book really is. It is so unorganized, and makes so many references to so many different people that i loose grasp of what the heck she is trying to talk about. And talk about the most ignorant person in the world!! How can a full grown teacher NOT have ever heard of Kwanzaa? How could she not know that Young blacks use the "N" word with one another? I mean come on, this author has been living in a bubble and the stuff she discovers is nothing beyond what everyone knows already. Rating:  - Communication is the key to the lock on multicultural edu.I am an education major and read this book for an assignment. I am very impreesed with this book. I love the idea of using continuious stories to encourage students to think and question. I am especially fond of the relation that Ms. Paley and her colleague Lorraine share. If only conversations like theirs were held between Black and White teachers at every school!
